fitness-as-you-ageComing to terms with the natural phenomenon of aging is not always a welcome thought; wrinkles, fine lines, puffy eyes, and, not to mention, loss of physical vigor. Given an opportunity we would all love to go through the sands of time. There are anti-aging supplements which, besides addressing the superficial aging concerns, also claim to bring a positive impact at the cellular level making you feel younger and fitter. To say that these claims are fact-based is debatable. As far as this post is concerned, it’ll help you understand the fundamentals of the aging process and explore as to what these commercially available anti-aging supplements claim.

Nature hasn’t defined rules that we look and feel younger and vibrant for an indefinite period of time. Well, there are many school of thoughts and, according to one of them, genes play a vital role in aging process. Without getting into too much science, we must also not forget the contribution of shortening of telomeres towards aging. According to another school of thought, mitochondrial DNA plays a vital role in aging. Epigenetics or the chemical changes that influence genes are also thought to be one of the factors leading towards aging. The free radical theory may be one of factors contributing towards aging.

Slows down aging process, not reverse it

Anti-aging supplements, that claim to make you look younger and improve your state of wellbeing, are perhaps trying to tell you that they can slow down the aging process and not reverse nature’s law. Antioxidant supplements claim to protect cells from damage due to free radicals. These include supplements containing Vitamin E and C that help combat free radicals and protect the cells from damage and gradually help to reduce the signs of aging superficially and also internally. These antioxidant supplements claim their ability to cleanse the cellular toxins that accumulate as part of aging process. They also aim to support body’s own mechanism and help promote the physical vigor, mental acuity that would have declined as part of the aging process.

There are other anti-aging supplements such as coenzyme Q10, alpha lipoic acid, GLA (gamma-linoleic acid), some non-essential amino acids, such as L-arginine, L-carnitine, and L-glutamine. These claim they may help to support a healthy functioning of heart, support eye health as we age, promote cellular function by protecting and nourishing cells. Other anti-aging supplements that include DHA could promote towards proper functioning of brain as we age. Omega 3 supplements also play a vital role towards supporting of brain functions as we age. Certain other supplements with a combination of polyphenols help protect genes from free radicals and environmental mutation or changes.

elderly-exerciseThere are other plant derived anti-aging supplements such as Resveratrol that claim to reduce the risk of health diseases such as diabetes and cardiovascular problems that are more likely to develop with age. However, this is something that your personal nutritionist or dietitian will be able to tell you better.

Of course, nothing beats a good diet and regular exercise to keep you fit, healthy, and strong for years and years. Keep in mind that everyone ages in time; it’s just a matter of keeping fit and eating healthy as you age.
